Your dream job

Your dream job is essentially your work – what you came to this planet to do, your purpose for being here. Job and work are often used interchangeably, but they do not mean the same thing. Even the dictionary adds to the confusion

Webster’s dictionary: job – the work that a person does regularly in order to earn money

A job is essentially something you do regularly to earn money (to pay your bills and keep your body and soul together). This is where most people are. They do not enjoy what they are doing. If their bosses inform them that the board has voted to convert the company to a full charity and salaries will no longer be paid, virtually everyone including the boss will stop showing up for work since everyone is in it for the money.

Your dream job is that place where your passion, skills, and marketplace needs meet. You absolutely love what you are doing. You are passionate about it. You have acquired the skills to do it well and you are eager to learn. There is a demand for what you are doing. When these three meet, you have found your place or found your voice. This is where miracles happen – job satisfaction, peak performance, flow, full engagement, growth, and development. This is the terrain true high fliers inhabit.

Most people think that what they are passionate about will not pay the bills. I have often wondered why this is so when it is glaring that folks in every field of endeavor are smiling all the way to the bank. Comedians, events managers, motivational speakers, life coaches, fashion consultants, writers, shopping consultants, fitness coaches, you name it. Everyone that has paid the price and gets to the top smiles all the way to the bank.

I don’t think the issue is that what you are passionate about will not pay the bills. The issue is that you need time to hone your skills to an expert level in the area you are passionate about. This may take months and sometimes years. A job comes pre-packaged. You earn within 2 weeks or one month, guaranteed. Hence a job is a shortcut to earning money. So rather than sweat it out without a guarantee of income, it makes no sense to take a job that guarantees income at the end of the agreed period.

Sadly, most people let go of their passion and dreams when they take on a job, rather than look at their passion and dream as their full-time work and just take a job by the side to keep body and soul together while pursuing their passion and dreams.

If you have finally met yourself, gotten to know who you are, and discovered your passion and what you would love to do with your life, you can take the time necessary to develop the skills you need to become a valuable player in that field. By the time you package your skills and passion to meet market needs, you are in the wealth zone. You can become a valuable employee or an entrepreneur with a fast-growing business.
