We seem to spend way too much time thinking/worrying about money. We have limited time and energy, hence we can really focus on one thing at a time. There are only twenty-four hours each day. We can only live for so long. It is our responsibility to determine what matters most to us and expend most of our energy there within the time we have.
Imagine you are driving to a city four hours away to make a presentation or close a deal. If your vehicle is roadworthy, all you need to do is fill up your tank or make provision for it. The moment that is done, you won’t spend days worrying about fuel or gas. Your thoughts would mainly be focused on making the trip a success.
However, when it comes to life, we hardly focus on what we came here to do. We focus on how to survive in order to keep surviving until our time is up. We forget about the presentation or the deal.
Focusing on money stands in the way
Preoccupation with finances takes away time that ought to be spent thinking about what matters most. We simply sleepwalk through life, without thinking through and developing a strategy to execute our plan. We fail to become who we were born to be in order to make the contribution we were born to make.
Beyond paying bills, owning nice homes, driving nice cars, and going on exotic vacations, what next?
I often ask myself why I write so much about money. Having studied the subject for more than 15 years, I came to the realization that you need financial freedom in order to pursue other freedoms. If you are not free financially, you are essentially a slave. If money takes so much of your time, there is hardly time for anything else.
Financial freedom is not about money. It is about freedom from slavery to money. It is about turning money from a cruel taskmaster to becoming a meek servant. This frees us to use that time, and mental and physical energy to give birth to our dreams. In the Holy Bible, God told Pharaoh ‘Let My people go, that they may hold a feast to Me in the wilderness.’ (Exodus 5:1). They were eventually let go. They had the feast and went on to build a great nation. That would not have happened if they remained slaves in Egypt.
Money is just a tool
Money is a very important tool. However, no matter how important it is, it remains a tool. It is to be brought out when needed and returned to the toolbox. It was not meant for the show window.
Our community and our nation need us. We were born for such a time as this, to manifest what we have on the inside. We have contributions yet to be made, and it is our duty to show up and make it happen.
It is very easy to believe we are not good enough. We have been told that for so long it becomes a constant song in our heads. So rather than face our fears and overcome our doubts, we hide in the rat race, playing catch up with the Joneses.
Money does not define who we are. Billionaires do commit suicide. Celebrities have self-doubts. No amount of money or fame will make you believe in yourself. It is an inside job. You have to sing your own song.
If we don’t get our acts together, we will always look for excuses rather than look for a way. We will keep looking for what is not lost. Nothing is as sad as an unlived life. It is our responsibility to change our story. We can think of new thoughts, play new songs and take care of our business. We can choose to keep money where it belongs so that we can rise up to where we belong.
