Christmas has come and gone, and 2010 is negotiating the last turn as it fades into history. It is time to look ahead with the benefit of hindsight. Forward-looking folks do not need to wait for the chime on midnight December 31st to usher in 2011. They have already stepped into 2011, hitting the ground running, and setting the stage for their attainment of quarter-one goals. You need a head start if you have goals you need to achieve from January to March next year.
If one of your goals like me is to regain control of your weight, the earlier you start the better. It does not make sense to stuff yourself during the holidays, adding more weight to what needs to be shed, and setting yourself up for yet another disappointment.
Have you ever wondered why aircraft needs a long stretch of runway to take off?
Momentum; aircraft needs the distance to gather enough momentum to take to the sky. The bigger the aircraft, the longer the runway required for takeoff. You do not have to wait for shouts of “Happy New Year!” to rent the air before you start your take-off run into the future. If you have not started already, start it now. Get into the habit that will support your goals. Putting it on paper is not enough.
- What are your goals for 2011?
- Have you attached timelines to the goals?
- What do you need to do daily to make it happen?
- What are you currently doing daily to make it happen?
- Who do you need to get in touch with to aid you along the way (who are the members of your dream team)?
- What do you need to let go this year?
- Who do you need to forgive?
- What price are you willing to pay this time around, over and beyond the price you paid last year?
- How desperate are you to achieve this goal?
There is always a price to pay to achieve your goals and dreams. The prize is always higher than you anticipated. This is where the rubber hits the road and water finds its own level. This is what separates the boys from the men.
You may have noticed that I now post to this blog every blessed day. That is one of the things I need to do daily to support my goal of making this blog a reference point for personal finance in Nigeria to get my message to a larger audience, so help me God. Trusting God is not enough, I have to do what it takes on a daily basis, often getting to bed later than my family. I am putting the finishing touches on my two books coming out in 2011. I have other plans I aint telling yet, but you will be the first to know when it happens.
A teacher named Scolastico said:
“If you would go every day to a very large tree and take five swings at it with a very sharp axe, eventually, no matter how large the tree, it would have to come down”
It is only a matter of time. What very large tree do you want to chop down in 2011, a tree so large that any time you think about it, you freeze into inaction, waiting for the day when thunder rolls, lightning strikes and you gather enough courage to finally do it?
Are you ready to start taking five swings at it with a very sharp axe EVERY DAY? Those five swings represent action items, five activities you need to accomplish on a daily basis toward that goal.
What are your goals for 2011? New Year’s resolutions are not enough. You have to sharpen your axe and start swinging it at that tree every single day
