Your main motive for starting a business should not be to make money. It should be to give, to offer the larger society what is presently lacking, to fill a need, to close a gap, and make the society a little bit better than before you came. To be able to give in a sustainable basis, you need to give from the depth of your soul. You have to give yourself. This is where passion and talent come in. You cannot give what you don’t have.
Don’t bother about the money just yet. If you take your place under the sun, money will look for you, you won’t need to pull crazy stunts chasing after money. There is no one that ever gave himself fully (develop to his utmost potential and serve) that ended up poor. Bill Gates gave the world the personal computer and Windows operating system. Imagine a world without PCs. Jeff Bezos gave the world an online book store – amazon.com so that you don’t need to go out in the rain anymore to find a bookshop that is just closing for the day, to find out they don’t even have the book you are looking for.
From the comfort of your bedroom, you can browse the entire bookshop, read what the book is about, see what others think about the book after reading it, and decide if it is worth your money and time. The world is full of billionaires and multi-millionaires who gave to the world or their societies and were handsomely rewarded for it.
So before you get yourself into any business, a business you intend to run, discover your passion and talents and determine if it is in line with the business you want to go into. Is it in your area or strength, or something you are willing to struggle with, in the hope of making money somewhere down the line? If you are in for the money, then you are in for frustration because the money comes after you have paid the price, not before. It makes sense therefore to discover what it is you really love to do before you go out the door.
What is your passion? What thrills you and brings an adrenaline rush? Money aside, what would you really love to do? If you are a dollar multi-millionaire and do not need to work again for the rest of your life, if you decide to go back to work for free, which work would you choose?
What are you good at? What skill comes naturally to you, without too much struggle, Do you just know you are good at this?
Take a journey in your imagination. Step into your dream world. Imagine a perfect day…
What are you doing? Where are you? What are you wearing? Which city are you living in, and what part of the city?
If you can answer these questions, then you have an idea where your passion lies, what you are good at, and the circumstance you seek to create rather than endure.
If you are having challenges answering the questions, think back at times in your life when you were really having fun, and people complimented you on what you were doing. That can be a pointer to where your talents and passion lies.
Take the time out to think long, hard, and deep. Reach into the depth of your soul and be true to yourself, without trying to impress. At the end of the day, life is about giving – being who you were born to be, and doing what you were born to do.
