As We Prepare to Bid 2009 Farewell

The year 2009 is gradually drawing to a close. For forward-looking folks, the year 2010 plan has been rolled out already. Before we dive into 2010 plans, let’s take a moment to look back at 2009, January – November (December is a month in its own right, and things still do happen for folks that maintain focus).

How has your year been? How are you faring, with respect to your plans, hopes, and dreams for 2009, and what actually happened? Can you say you have largely achieved your year 2009 goals?

If you are like most folks, you will be wondering what happened to your expectations for 2009. The year dawned with so much promise, with a new improved new year resolution in tow.

Have you ever wondered why year in and year out, you start the year with great expectations, and end the same with disappointments? You are not alone. Nigerians are optimists. They hope for the best, which is good. However, hope not backed up with the change required to make the hope a reality is a pious hope anchored on wishful thinking.

Each new year has a slogan to go with it: my year of prosperity, my year of increase, my year of Eagles flight, my year of breakthrough, my year of ….. you fill in the blank. There are colorful stickers to go with it, on cars, bibles, etc. Some car owners add on new stickers without removing the old ones, turning their rear windscreens into moving billboards.

There can be no happy new year, without a happy new you. You simply have to change, end of story. If you remain the same, same mindset, same outlook, and same modus operandi, you get the same results. Nothing will change, no matter how many colorful stickers you accumulate. Garbage in, garbage out. It is the law. No stunt you pull can break this law in a sustainable manner. Like gravity, you can only go so far, you will come crashing down to earth. Praying and giving will not waive this law, it only accelerates the provision of the law the moment you line up with the law. You cannot put new wine in an old wineskin, it will burst. You need a new wineskin. You need a new (renewed) mind.

Let me use the computer as an illustration. A new software comes out all the time, requiring more memory and processing speed to run well. Imagine you have a Pentium III system and want to run Microsoft Vista, then you’ve got it coming. If you manage by hook or crook to load the vista, running it will be another story. Why? You do not have enough memory and processing speed to run the operating system or software. The system will simply hang, and serial reboots will not help. You are over-laboring the poor Pentium III. It was not built to handle such software.

You have two options, either donate the system to charity and buy a new up-to-date system, or upgrade (change your hard disk and motherboard). For computers, the easiest thing to do is to buy a new system. For human beings, you cannot trade in a human for a newer model (though some men try it with women). The only option is to upgrade. You can now see how foolhardy it is to try to run better/newer software with old hardware, trying to move to a NEW level with an OLD mindset. It just does not work. It will hang.

You have to upgrade your thinking, change your mindset, move from lack mentality to abundance mentality, from “No I can’t” to “Yes I can!”, from impossible to possible, from memory (past) to imagination (future). You have to upgrade or remain where you are and continue to mouth slogans “My year of increase” etc. You are not going to experience any increase until you can see it in your mind. You cannot see it in your mind unless you change your mindset, your beliefs, and what you think is possible. What you think is real, is your reality.

As the year 2009 draws to a close, choose ye this day which mindset you will enter 2010 with. Remain the same, or upgrade to the next level. It is your call…
