The major challenge most of us seem to face is knowing what we really want. If you do not know what you really want, you will literally sleepwalk through life simply going with the flow, wherever that might lead. We do not really stop to ponder or think through what we really want. Consequently, we take random actions and hope for the best.
We are so used to knowing what we don’t want. We talk about it all the time. When you invest so much emotional energy in declaring what you don’t want, you end up not giving much attention to what you really want.
It is commonly acknowledged that common sense is not common. Logically, something may make common sense but most people do not operate on that awareness because common sense is in levels, and until you attain that level of maturity, that common sense will not be available to you.
It is common sense that if you keep giving all your money away without saving and investing to yield more income, you will end up with your wallet or bank account empty most of the time. However, only a few people have attained that level of common sense, hence it is actually not common sense in the real sense of the word. It is common sense that if you take in more calories than you burn, you put on weight. Again few people operate in that simple wisdom.
The challenge is that most of us have not developed the discipline of continuous learning and using our minds to think. Sometimes you catch yourself doing something dumb and ask yourself “What was I thinking?” Actually, you were not thinking.
According to Henry Ford, “Thinking is the hardest work there is, which is probably the reason why so few engage in it.”
Thinking is hard work. It requires a certain level of discipline to force our minds to think consistently before acting. This discipline comes with a certain level of maturity. Left to its own devices, the mind naturally wanders about, flitting from one thing to another like a butterfly.
Most of the actions we take are not a result of deliberate thought but out of our habits. Until you learn to really use your mind to think, you will be held hostage to old habits and keep getting the same old results.
One area you really need to think through is who you are and what you really want. Until you answer these questions, you will keep mirroring others not knowing what you really want and going around in circles.
