Financial Housekeeping

Posted on | August 5, 2010 | 10 Comments

As a fan of Clean House on the Style Network, I enjoy seeing a house taken over by clutter being straightened out through a ruthless de-cluttering exercise. I know it is not easy on the owners of the clutter. Some had their prized clutter pried off their grip, kicking and screaming. Although clutter was literally driving them out of their house, locking them in the past, they still find it hard to let go.

The same applies to financial clutter. It covers your finances in a fog of comforting ambiguity, a state of being clueless as to your true financial state. You know you are on a financial treadmill going nowhere, but lack the will to pull over and do a spring cleaning on your finances.

Financial clutter manifests in many forms – currency notes scattered around the house (shirt and trouser pockets, under cushions, hidden and forgotten somewhere in the house), dividend warrants to deposited in the bank, bills not paid, cheque books not balanced, account statements not opened and read to verify accuracy, receipts littered around the house, etc.

Financial clutter obscures the state of your finances and makes nonsense of your financial goals. If you do not know where you are, you cannot reasonably make your way to where you desire to go, because the process of growth is based on incremental progress. Financial clutter also robs you of your self esteem, making you feel powerless over your finances. Instead of being in the drivers seat of your finances, you become a bystander watching money come in and disappear in a haze.

Housekeeping

Financial housekeeping involves restoring order to your finances. Sorting out your receipt, reining in your loose cash into a piggy bank en route your savings account, setting up accounts for savings, investment and emergencies, tidying up your wallet and receipt, determining how much you have and how much you owe etc.

This is usually preceded by a general de-cluttering exercise, as your finances cannot remain an island of sanity for long amidst a sea of general clutter. If you have clothes or appliances you have not used in the last six months, it is about time to say goodbye. If you have documents you have not referred to in 2 years, it may be time for it to go out with the thrash, unless there are legal requirements to retain them longer. It is painful to say goodbye to some darlings, but if you are to say goodbye to the past, in order to embrace the future you desire, goodbye is inevitable.

So in the final analysis, clean out your closet, clean out your house, clean out your emotions, say goodbye to yesterday, forgive past wrongs, and forgive yourself for messing up, clean out your finances, pay off your debt, build up your savings and asset portfolio, and regain focus to create the life of your dreams. It begins with clean house, literally
