Before You Look For A Job

Posted on | February 25, 2010 | No Comments

Looking for a job seems to be the logical next step for people after graduation. Very few stop to think why they are looking for a job, and which type of job they are looking for. For most, any high paying job goes. Show them the money, and they are in business, be it a Doctor in banking, who cares?

For most people, including Christians who supposedly wait on God for direction, the choice between two jobs is very easy. If one job offers N50,000 per month while the other job offers N500,000 per month, God has spoken, case closed. The bigger pay has it, don’t even think about it. Passion, purpose, goals, dreams go out through the window as we sell our souls for high paying jobs leading nowhere near our dreams.

So before you start shooting your CVs, ask your self why you need a job, and if you really do, what type of job, and what the job will add to you, by way of attaining your dreams. This looks like a stupid question. How dare you ask why I am looking for a job? Are you in this planet? Hello? I need to feed, get accommodation, get a ride, buy clothes, send money to my folks, get married etc. I cannot do without a job.

Yes you can. You have two options, get a job or hire yourself. Save and start something during youth service. Some corpers pass out looking for who to hire while the majority are looking for who to help them distribute their CV. Even if you have to look for a job, what type of job? What skills do you need for the next level? Will that job provide you with those skills? Sometimes you may have to work for free to be able to get the opportunity to acquire the skills you require for the next level. Another advantage of working for free is that it weans you off the addiction of working for money, rather than have money work for you. If you are addicted to working for money, making (creating) money or having money work for you will sound like Latin

So before you reach for the next copy of your CV, ask yourself if this job is a stepping stone to your destination, or it is simply something to keep body and soul together. A dream job creates a platform whereby you acquire the skills needed to go for your dreams, while providing funds to save towards your next move and savings to tide you over rough times. If you do not deliberately plan your life, circumstances and pressures will plan it for you

If you have no dreams, future goals or aspirations, then this article is not for you. You are doing just fine. Keep grabbing any job that comes your way, so far as the pay is better than your current job. If you are going nowhere, you will surely get there.
